Impact and Compression: Dropped and Rolling Objects

A safety toe cap guards your toes against dropped tools and rolling equipment. Steel, alloy, and composite caps all meet the same ASTM F2413 toe requirements. The cap must keep at least 0.5 inches of interior clearance after 75 foot-pounds of impact energy (about a 50-pound weight dropped) and 2,500 pounds of compression force.

Electrical Shock: EH Rating

EH stands for electrical hazard. An EH-rated sole and heel add a layer of protection if you accidentally contact a live circuit. To earn the ASTM F2413-24 EH rating, the boots must withstand 18,000 volts at 60 Hz for one minute with no more than 1.0 milliamp of leakage, tested dry.

Read that last word closely. EH is secondary protection that degrades when your boots get wet, so treat it as a backup, not a green light for live-circuit work. A non-metallic composite toe helps here too, since it won't conduct.

Punctures and Metatarsal Injuries

A puncture-resistant (PR) plate sits under the insole and stops nails, screws, and sharp debris from driving through the sole. Under the F2413-24 puncture and met specs, a rated plate resists about 270 pounds of force. A metatarsal guard, or met guard, shields the instep on top of your foot that the toe cap can't reach, and it passes a 75 foot-pound impact test applied over the instep.
