How They Differ
Both toes have to clear the same certified safety bar, so neither is "weaker" by rule. The real differences show up in weight, temperature, electrical hazards, and how each one holds up over time.
Same Safety Standard, Different Materials

Is a composite toe just as good as a steel toe? By the numbers, yes. Both caps have to pass the same ASTM F2413 safety toe standard to earn certification. The cap takes a 50-lb weight dropped from 18 inches, which works out to 75 foot-pounds of impact energy. It also holds up to 2,500 pounds of static compressive force. For electrical hazard soles, the sole and heel are tested to 18,000 volts at 60 Hz for one minute. During that test, no current flow can exceed 1.0 milliampere under dry conditions.
Weight and Comfort
Composite is the lighter material, and it shows up on your feet. Composite-toe boots run about 30% lighter than steel-toe boots, around 3 pounds per pair. But steel has trade-offs. A hard enough strike can dent a steel cap and pin your toe, and steel can rust or corrode over time. Composite tends to crack or absorb the energy instead, and it won't rust.
