The hat holds its shape well and the pencil holder is a neat little gimmick... In fact it's why I bought it in the first place. The pencil stays in place very well, but the trade-off is that you can't easily put the pencil back in, or at least it'll take some practice. Ultimately, I think this could also be pretty useful to hold a pen light or some other small flashlight aimed wherever you're looking.
It would have been nice to have a left-handed option or a loop on both sides, but that's not a deal breaker.
